Nantucket Pine Tip Moth

Pathogen Type
Scientific Name
Rhyacionia frustrana
Frequency
2
Severity
3
Hosts
The Nantucket pine tip moth attacks all pines with two or three needles per bundle except for two of these pines not normally grown in the midwest
Symptoms
Tips of branches die back. Close examination reveals pitch covering the base of the needles. Breaking open the shoot will reveal that the tip has been hollowed out. Annual infestations result in reduced growth and bushiness due to increased lateral bud growth.
Cycle
This insect usually has several generations per growing season.
Management
Prune out and destroy the dead branch tips. If necessary use a recommended insecticide.
